Stage 3: Police investigation

What happens when Police investigate sexual violence?

Police will start their investigation after you have confirmed that you would like to proceed with a formal complaint – this may be before or after you make your formal witness statement. An investigation can take days, months or years. It is your right to be treated with respect, courtesy, compassion and dignity during this process. You can access support at any time.

If the person who hurt you was someone you were in a relationship with, a family member, or someone who is caring for you, you might be experiencing domestic or family violence. Police might also talk to you about protection orders.
